Saddle Horse Adoption
The gentling program in
Carson City, Nevada, began in October 2000.  It is a cooperative effort shared by Silver State Industries (the Nevada Department of Corrections industries program) and the Nevada Department of Agriculture.  Originally the program trained only estrays (State horses), but through an agreement, inmates now also train wild horses removed from lands managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM).

Wild horses to be trained are selected primarily from equines being held and fed for the BLM at the minimum security facility located at the Nevada State Prison Dairy. Selected animals are transported to the Paul Iverson training facility at the Warm Springs Correctional Center.  Inmates work with the horses for about 120 days, prior to the animal being offered for private adoption at a Saturday competitive bid event. Training includes hoof handling and trimming, saddling, bridling, work under saddle, and loading into a stock trailer.
