FOR RELEASE:

National
Wild Horse and Burro Show & Adoption July 9-11
The 13th annual National Wild Horse and Burro Show
returns to the Events Center in Winnemucca, Nevada on July 9, 10 and 11.
Wild horse adoptions sponsored by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM)
will be conducted on July 10.
The show begins Friday at 1 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday at 8 a.m. and
is sponsored by the National Wild Horse and Burro Show Association. The
national show features about 75 classes in pleasure, equitation, driving
and games for wild horses and burros. All participant skill levels and
ages are welcome. Class winners will be awarded ribbons or prizes. The
judges will be Sandy Hawkins of Carson City, Nevada, and Patty Hughes
from Quincy, California. Detailed information, including an entry form,
is available at www.wild-horse.org
or by calling show secretary Jim Davies at (775) 867-2355.
Five saddle-trained, three halter-trained and 30 untrained horses will
be offered at silent competitive bid adoptions on Saturday, July 10. A
one-year-old, grulla halter-trained gelding has been designated as the
Association show horse, and proceeds from the adoption of that horse
will benefit the Show Association. The saddle-trained and halter-trained
horses will be delivered to the Center from the Warm Springs
Correctional Center, Carson City, where they have been trained by
supervised inmates. Videotape and photographs show off the untrained
horses which are currently in a contracted facility in Fallon, Nevada.
Successful adopters of saddle- and halter-trained geldings must pick up
their horses during the July 10-11 weekend, but those who adopt
untrained animals may choose to have their animal delivered to
Winnemucca on July 16 and 17 or make an appointment to pick up the horse
in Fallon.
Silent bids for the untrained horses will be accepted from 9 a.m. to
noon on July 10. A drawing for the halter-trained horse dedicated to the
Show Association will be held at noon. A silent competitive bid for the
saddle-trained horses and three halter-trained horses begins at 1 p.m.
on Saturday. Minimum competitive bids begin at $125, but you must be
pre-qualified by BLM to bid. A second round for those animals not
selected earlier in the day begins at 3 p.m. Photos of all horses
offered for adoption on July 10 may be seen on the BLM’s website; go
to www.wildhorseandburro.blm.gov and click
on State Programs, Nevada. For adoption
information, call 775 623-1500.
Spectators are welcome at all shows as there is no admission charge.
Vendors will offer belt buckles, posters, commemorative coins, arts and
crafts, jewelry and other wild horse and burro souvenirs.
The National Wild Horse and Burro Show Association sponsors the show to
promote the adoption of excess wild horses and burros removed from the
public lands. The show also helps participants and the public understand
the need for gentle training techniques, proper nutrition and adequate
veterinary care for adopted wild horses and burros.
