Area residents play an important role in public land use decisions
Everyday Nevadans are helping the Bureau of Land Management make public lands decisions via their membership in one of
three Resource Advisory Councils, or RACs.
The three RACS statewide are the Northeastern Great Basin RAC, the
Mojave-Southern Great Basin RAC and the Sierra Front-Northwestern Great Basin RAC.
The Bureau of Land Management, Ely District receives input from two of the three RACs.
The Northeastern Great Basin RAC helps advise the Ely District on
public lands issues in White Pine County, while the Mojave-Southern Great Basin RAC provides input for Lincoln and Nye
counties.
Statewide, the RACs are comprised of residents who have been appointed for their expertise in natural resource
issues. Each participating member offers the federal land management agency knowledge and insight gained from years of
experience in their particular profession, providing advice on such issues as land use planning, range improvements and
standards for the ecological health of the public lands.
Individual RACs meet several times each year, usually quarterly. Combined, the RACs meet once a year.
Each RAC is comprised of 15 members. Individuals may nominate either themselves or
someone else to the RAC representing their area. All nominees must be Nevada residents, have a letter of endorsement from
the interest group they intend to represent, and be willing to serve for three years, unless he or she is replacing a
member who left the council before their term expired.
For more information on how to become a RAC member, or about the RACs themselves, visit the Reno State Office, BLM Web Site at
