The Elly Mountain Protection Project encompasses approximately 37 acres around the Elly Mountain Lookout and communication sites located on Elly Peak. The objective of the project would be to provide protection to these facilities from wildfire. Implementation of the project would consist of removing brush within 50 feet of the structures and thinning the pinyon/juniper trees within 500 feet of the structure and under the ponderosa stand. After brush removal and tree thinning the slash would be piled and burned. An understory burn would be conducted in the ponderosa stand to reduce the chance of an uphill run from a wildfire. Brush removal and thinning would take place with hand crews using chainsaws.
