Clover Mountains Ponderosa Restoration

The Clover Mountains Ponderosa Restoration project would encompass approximately 800 to 1,000 acres in the Clover Mountains of Lincoln County, Nevada. The objective of this project is to remove encroaching pinyon/juniper tree adjacent to and within the ponderosa pine community. This would provide protection for the ponderosa community against wildfire and restore the health of the ponderosa community. Implementation of the project would primarily involve manually removing pinyon/juniper trees utilizing hand crews with chainsaws. Where feasible, machinery (Fecon or hydroax) could be used to remove the trees. Once the trees are removed, the larger pieces could be used for biomass (i.e. firewood), and slash would then be piled and burned. Pinyon/juniper trees would be removed from underneath the ponderosa canopy and within 50 feet of the stand. Once the pinyon/juniper has been removed, an understory prescribed burn could be conducted.
