Caselton Mill Tailings Update
In 2001, The BLM released a draft Final Economic Evaluation/Cost Analysis (EE/CA) for public comment. The EE/CA outlines alternative actions the BLM might take to permanently clean up the Caselton Mill Tailings site and address potential risks to human health and safety.

In 2002, pursuant to the regulations governing mining claims, the Oxidor Corporation notified BLM of Oxidors’s intention to conduct a pilot project to evaluate the feasibility of repossessing the Caselton Mill Tailings. Pending completion of Oxidor’s pilot project, the BLM has deferred any decision concerning the permanent cleanup of the site. In the meantime, the BLM has issued an Action Memorandum (Decision Document) outlining several interim measures that will be completed this spring to address immediate concerns at the site. These removal actions include:

  1. Fencing the portions of the site to restrict entry to the public and wildlife.
  2. Developing and maintaining the engineered water run on and off controls.
  3. Repairing the Prince Tailings Impoundment dam.
  4. Placing a dust suppressant polymer cap on the wind blown tailings.
Future decisions concerning the permanent cleanup of the site will be based on an evaluation of site conditions, as they exist after interim measures have taken and the status of mining activities has been resolved.
