THRUST LAND SPEED RECORD TEAM APPLAUDED

The British Thrust SSC Project set the first supersonic land speed record in the Black Rock Desert, Nevada, by averaging 763.035 for two average runs. Royal Air Force pilot Andy Green was the driver of the car, while Richard Noble was the project leader
Before the car returned to Britain, it was on display at the Peppermill Hotel and Casino in Reno, Nevada. The vehicle weighs 20,000 pounds and is powered by two jet engines.
The British team was applauded for "consistently going above and beyond Bureau of Land Management (BLM) requirements in taking care of public lands during the permit period," according to BLM's Winnemucca Associate District Manager Mike Holbert. The BLM's compliance officer Mike Bilbo said he could find no trace of the British Thrust SSC headquarters soon after the successful team left the Black Rock Desert, which is located near Gerlach, Nevada.
Thrust team members accepting the award from BLM responded favorably about their record-setting visit to America. Holbert has just told the crowd, "Your stewardship is a model that we in BLM can use when preparing other special recreation permits for activities on the Playa."
BLM Associate District Manager Mike Holbert presented members of the British Thrust SSC Project team with a plaque recognizing the team's care of public lands. The plaque features a map of Nevada which depicts the north-south trending mountains and rugged features of the terrain.
The Thrust team posted Bureau of Land Management guidelines for taking care of public lands during the land speed attempt. Both Tread Lightly! and Leave No Trace back country use guidelines were on the Thrust home page which was read and accessed by over a million people daily when the attempt was ongoing.
