wpe6F.gif (960 bytes) Water Canyon

This secluded canyon is located within 20 minutes south of Winnemucca, and offers picnicking, birdwatching and camping (four nights maximum). The year-round stream provides a lush riparian environment.  2006 will see additional improvements made to the area.

wpe6F.gif (960 bytes) Pine Forest Recreation Area

There are three popular recreation sites within the Pine Forest Recreation Area. Blue Lakes, Onion Reservoir, and Knott Creek Reservoir. All three have superb scenery, excellent fishing, hunting, wildlife viewing, primitive camping, mountain biking, and opportunities for photography exist at every turn. This is a remote area, with dirt roads. Bring extra food and water. Four-wheel drive vehicles are advised. The roads are passable only in dry weather.

wpe6F.gif (960 bytes) High Rock Canyon

The High Rock Canyon was once part of the alternate route to the Oregon Trail and subsequently became the Applegate-Lassen Trail in 1849; this portion of the California National Historic Trail is considered one of the most historic canyon routes in the West. Scenic steep canyon walls of basaltic flows have been carved over centuries of wind and water. Access is limited to high clearance four-wheel drive vehicles and the road can be treacherous if visitors are not prepared for back country travel. The canyon is closed February 1 to April 15.
