GLAMIS MARIGOLD MINE EXPANSION PROPOSED

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is asking the public for comments on a proposal by Glamis Marigold Mining Company to amend its plan of operations for the Marigold Mine located about 15 miles northwest of Battle Mountain, Nevada. The amendment, called the West Marigold Expansion, would authorize additional mining activities adjoining and to the west of the existing mine operations.

The proposal would include expanding the existing Terry Zone, East Hill and Marigold open pits, developing the Terry Zone North open pit, expanding two existing waste rock storage areas (one of which was previously reclaimed), constructing a new heap leach pad adjoining those previously approved, constructing a new process pond that would adjoin the existing ponds, changing the location and expanding the existing diversion of one drainage and diverting another drainage along a section of its lower reaches, and developing associated features such as haul roads and topsoil stockpiles.

Total new disturbance would affect 987 acres on both private and public lands located entirely within areas analyzed in two previous Environmental Impact Statements. The BLM is seeking public input on the proposed action. Written comments are welcome and may be submitted through November 1, 2004 to Lynn Harrison, Planning and Environmental Coordinator, Winnemucca Field Office, 5100 E Winnemucca Blvd, Winnemucca NV 89445-2921. The proposed amendment may be reviewed at the Winnemucca Field Office by contacting Chuck Johnson or Ken Loda at 775-623-1500. Questions about environmental concerns should be directed to Ms. Harrison at the same number.
