WIND FARM PROPOSED NORTHEAST OF WINNEMUCCA

The proposed Getchell Wind Farm northeast of Winnemucca would look much like this one in northern SpainNavitas Energy of Minneapolis, Minnesota has submitted a proposal to the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Winnemucca Field Office to construct a wind energy generation project in the Dry Hills located about 22 miles northeast of Winnemucca on the west side of the Osgood Mountains. The project, to be called the Getchell Wind Farm, would generate up to 80 megawatts of electricity.

BLM wants to hear from the public about this proposal before it begins its National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) work. "This is the first proposal for a wind farm like this in our part of Nevada and we want to give the public an opportunity to comment and express concerns early on in the NEPA process," explained Bob Edwards, Supervisory Realty Specialist at the Winnemucca Field Office.

The project would consist of constructing up to 40 wind turbine generators 100 meters in height (ca. 328 feet) with blade diameters of 285 feet, an electrical collection system, two substations, and approximately 8-10 miles of access roads. The two substations and five of the wind turbine generators would be on private lands. The reminder of the facility would be on public lands managed by the BLM. Navitas proposes to begin construction in late spring of 2005 and anticipates completing the project 6 to 9 months later.

Comments and concerns should be submitted in writing by no later than July 6, 2004 by mail to Jeff Johnson, Environmental Protection Specialist, Winnemucca Field Office, 5100 East Winnemucca Blvd, Winnemucca NV 89445-2921, by fax to his attention to 775-623-1503, or by email to wfoweb@nv.blm.gov (with "Wind Farm" on the subject line).
