BLM ANNOUNCES PROPOSED SEAWEST WINDPOWER PROJECT

A Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM) Environmental Assessment (EA) on a proposal for wind energy testing by SeaWest WindPower, Inc. (SeaWest) is available for public review and comment in the BLM Winnemucca Field Office through May 6, 2004. The EA analyzes potential impacts from wind energy testing in the Osgood Mountains, approximately 25 miles northeast of the City of Winnemucca in Humboldt County, Nevada.

SeaWest proposes to install 2 temporary, tilt-up anemometer masts to collect wind speed, wind direction, and temperature data. Each tower will be 164 feet in length, supported by 8 guy wires and 8 screw in anchors. The towers are 6 inch diameter hollow steel tubes that rest on 2 foot square steel base plates. Near the top of the each tower is a horizontal arm for mounting the sensors.

The EA is available on the Winnemucca Field Office web page at: http://www.nv.blm.gov/winnemucca/NEPA  Written comments may be sent to the Winnemucca Field Office, Attention: Jeff Johnson, 5100 East Winnemucca Boulevard, Winnemucca, NV 89445-2951.

Wind energy projects may also be proposed for the Dry Hills and the Sonoma Mountains in Humboldt County and the Humboldt Mountains in Pershing County. To be added to a notification list for EAs for these areas when they become available, contact Bob Edwards, BLM Winnemucca Cultural, Land & Recreation Resources Supervisor, (775) 623-1500.
