Winnemucca students learn about
the effects of fire on the environment
At a windy spot outside Winnemucca where fire had once consumed
countless acres of brush and grass, students from the
Winnemucca public schools got to learn a lot about the effect that fire
has on the environment. These students came out to the place
where the fire was stopped so they could see the difference between where
the fire burned away the vegetation and where the land was untouched
by the flames.
For the second year, BLM's Winnemucca Field Office used its Project Fire program to
increase environmental awareness among local school children.
Each of these students went through a series of stations to make their own
observations and gather data. The stations were manned by
older students. The BLM Winnemucca Field Office will actually use
the data that these students collect, so the children take their tasks seriously.
A total of 1,520 students participated in Project Fire. These included children from
the fourth, fifth, sixth and eighth grades, as well as high school students.
